In June, 2010, Indies Greens was brought to life with the vision to modernize agriculture in Antigua and Barbuda with a laser focus on sustainability and self-sufficiency.

Built on a strong foundation of technology, Indies Greens was designed to sheppard in a new era of farming with a focus on sustainable practices, technological innovations, and self-sufficiency.

With each passing year, Indies Greens has continuously spread its roots into new pastures, blossoming into one of the most diverse and captivating nature experiences in the Caribbean, with offerings for:

Whether through cultivation, celebration, or conservation, Indies Greens offers a natural, home-grown experience like no other.

Sustainability

Sustainability

With limited land-space and freshwater on offer, Antigua and Barbuda provides a challenging environment to all of its farmers. Facing this, Indies Greens has evolved to become as resource-efficient and self-sufficient as possible, implementing numerous sustainable practices to overcome these challenges.

The first challenge: Power Consumption.

Indies Greens' high dependency on technology leads to a high power consumption, and therefore a high carbon footprint. The resulting costs were unsustainable and the potential environmental impact were contrary to the company's vision. A large-scale investment was made into a solar-renewable energy plant to mitigate these power needs. Today, Indies Greens is 100% solar powered and generates a surplus of solar-electricity that is fed back into the public power grid, resulting in a negative carbon footprint in that regard.

The second challenge: Water Consumption.

With approximately 90,000 gallons (340,000 litres) of water required for production, an enormous amount for a drought-prone island, drastic measures were taken to ensure long-term water security for the operation. Using extensive recirculating techniques and a comprehensive rainwater collection system, Indies Greens was able to reduce its water consumption by over 99% and uses self-caught rainwater for approximately 80% of its annual water consumption.

The Third challenge: Organic Waste.

Commercial grade farming produces high amounts of organic waste. Indies Greens is no exception. Determined to offset any potential environmental impact, Indies Greens decided to transform its waste into its most defining features, the garden. All organic waste is composted and used as fertilizer for the garden, while all waste water produced by the operation is used to irrigate the garden. The result: an Eden-like garden that stands as the focal point of the operation and the backdrop for countless weddings, parties and tours. The literal embodiment of turning trash into treasure.

Technology

Technology

Built by technicians, not traditional farmers, Indies Greens was designed with strong technological foundations with the vision to redefine agriculture for future generations.

Technology and automation are used extensively throughout the operation. From the feeding of fish, to the adding of fertilizers, to the monitoring of systems, technology is heavily used to maximize efficiency, minimize work load, and streamline production.

Environmental sensors are widely used to monitor dozens of parameters in real time, including pH, water levels, water temperature, air temperature, humidity, dissolved oxygen, nutrient concentration, and the list goes on. This comprehensive monitoring system gives the management and staff an accurate overview of the production, allowing accurate decisions to be made quickly and consistently.

Industrial-grade equipment is used throughout the operation to ensure reliable production. Every thing from pumps, to filters, to sensors are designed to be as robust and dependable as possible. All equipment undergoes constant monitoring and provide real-time alerts when problems arise, allowing for rapid responses, minimal downtime, and maximum production.

The extensive use of technology and monitoring allows for a very compact and focused team, requiring only 3 full-time staff to manage the entire farm production.

When it comes to technical management, Indies Greens relies fully on internal competence to take care of all technological needs. All system design, plumbing, and electrical installation is handled in-house, meaning that Indies Greens is 100% built from the ground up with no external dependency.

Indies Greens' in-house technical department also builds custom software to manage the operation, ranging from the software for system monitoring to the software used for business management and accounting. This technical competency has allowed Indies Greens to continuously evolve, stay at the forefront of innovation, quickly adopt new technologies in agriculture, and embrace modern business practices.

Local

Local

Indies Greens was created with a strong local pride. Being 100% locally-owned, the owners of Indies Greens make great efforts to support the local community and raise the standard of local production.

All product offerings are tailored to the local market, with emphasis on affordability and an extraordinary standard of quality.

The efforts extend beyond Indies Greens itself as the management collaborates extensively with other local farmers to help further agricultural development in Antigua and Barbuda. Numerous farmers and students have receiving training at Indies Greens in courses covering aquaponics, hydroponics, aquaculture, backyard farming, renewable energy solutions, and many other agriculture-related topics.

Indies Greens frequently collaborates with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to facilitate and implement various agricultural development initiatives on the island. This includes installing new technologies on farms, provisioning equipment and materials used to upgrade farms, implementing modernization strategies for local farmers, and providing training to delegated groups.

During the COVID-19 Pandemic, significant changes were made to the operations of Indies Greens to further increase collaboration with other local producers. These changes gave birth to long-term partnerships through which Indies Greens is supplied with and distributes produce from local producers, and local producers are supplied with resources and on-going support from Indies Greens. This arrangement leverages the vast technical resources of Indies Greens, reduces the strain on local producers, and allows for a higher quality produce that can be delivered to the local market.

These partnerships are aimed at facilitating an eco-system where farmers and producers compliment each other instead of competing with each other.
