How We Produce
At Indies Greens we utilize various farming methods in our production, namely aquaculture, hydroponics and aquaponics.
Aquaculture is simply the growing of fish and other aquatic species. This is the primary method used to produce our ornamental fish, aquatic plants, and marine species.
Hydroponics is the growing of plants without soil. We utilize various versions of hydroponics such as Dutch Buckets, flood and drain, and deep-water culture. We use hydroponics primarily for the production of herbs and seasonings at Indies Greens.
Aquaponics is the marriage of aquaculture and hydroponics, in which the nutrient-rich water from the aquaculture system is used as the main water source for the hydroponics system. This creates a mutually-beneficial system where the fish produce nutrient-rich water for the plants while the plants remove these nutrients and return fresh, filtered water that can be reused for the fish. At Indies Greens, Aquaponics is used for our high-volume productions, namely the production of lettuce and tilapia.

IG CARES
Indies Greens Caribbean Agriculture Resource Exchange System (IG CARES) is a system designed to facilitate large-scale co-operation between hydroponic farmers in Antigua and Barbuda. IG CARES pools the resources of local hydroponic farmers, leveraging each individual's strengths to create a network of resources and support to unite hydroponic farmers, effectively supply the local market, and reduce the country's reliance on imported produce.
IG CARES utilizes the technical resources of Indies Greens to handle the storage and distribution of produce, supply farmers with fertilizers and equipment, and provide on-going support to farmers within the program. Providing this support system reduces the administrative pressures on smaller farmers, allowing them to focus on one thing: growing high-quality produce.
IG CARES is aimed at facilitating an eco-system where local farmers and producers compliment each other instead of competing with each other, allowing for rapid advancements in agriculture and food security in Antigua and Barbuda.
